For a day out from Tiburtina, the Colosseum is a starting point for exploring Rome’s ancient center: it sits within the Colosseum Archaeological Park, alongside the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. A timed Colosseum visit can anchor your plans, with the Forum and Palatine to explore before or after.

  • Park: Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
  • Metro: Line B serves Colosseo station; Line C serves Colosseo-Fori Imperiali station.
  • Standard ticket: €18 full price or €2 for eligible EU citizens aged 18 to under 25; valid for 24 hours.
  • Timed entry: Compulsory for the Colosseum; arrive at its entrance 15 minutes before your booked time.
Choosing a route through the ancient center

Choosing a route through the ancient center

A practical route through the ancient center is to anchor the day on your booked Colosseum time and fit the Roman Forum and Palatine around it. The standard ticket allows you to visit the Forum-Palatine archaeological area before or after the Colosseum, within 24 hours before or after the booked Colosseum time.

That flexibility lets you choose the sequence that works with your entry slot: visit the Forum and Palatine first, or go to the Colosseum first and continue through the archaeological area afterward. The ticket allows one Colosseum entry and one entry to the Forum-Palatine area, so plan on a single visit to each.

The park groups these sites together, but the ticket does not make the Colosseum entry open-ended: its visit is limited to 75 minutes. For a broader day plan that includes the historic center, the one-day Rome route from Tiburtina to the historic center can help you think about how the ancient sights fit into the rest of the city.

How do you get from Tiburtina to the Colosseum?

How do you get from Tiburtina to the Colosseum?

From Tiburtina Hotel Holiday, Roma Tiburtina station is about an 8-minute walk. From there, take Metro Line B to Colosseo station for the Colosseum; Line C serves Colosseo-Fori Imperiali station. Bus routes 51, 75, 81, 85, 87 and 118, and tram route 3 also serve the area. The Colosseum is at Piazza del Colosseo in Rome.

From the Colosseum, pair your visit with the Roman Forum and Palatine, which are part of the same archaeological park. The guide to using the Rome metro from the Tiburtina area covers the local metro context.

For the Forum, the main gateway is at Largo della Salara Vecchia 5/6, with another entrance on Via del Tulliano. Other Forum and Palatine entrances include the Arch of Titus, Via del Foro Romano and Via di San Gregorio. Consider which entrance best fits the order you have chosen for the archaeological area.

Understanding entry and ticket options

Understanding entry and ticket options

The standard Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket covers the main archaeological sites and requires a timed Colosseum entry. It costs €18 at full price or €2 for EU citizens aged 18 until the day before their 25th birthday.

The ticket is valid for 24 hours and includes one Colosseum entry and one entry to the Roman Forum-Palatine archaeological area.

With this ticket, you can visit the Colosseum’s first and second levels, panoramic terraces and Colosseum Museum, as well as the Roman Forum, Roman Forum Museum, Palatine and ongoing exhibitions.

The Colosseum portion is limited to 75 minutes. Arrive at the Colosseum entrance 15 minutes before your booked time; entry at a different time from the one booked is not permitted.

Tickets go on sale 30 days before the visit date through the official online sales channel. Tickets are issued in the holder’s name, and you must keep an identification document visible with your ticket at the park entrances. You can show an online ticket on your smartphone; printing is not necessary.

Other products have different coverage. The Forum Pass SUPER does not include the Colosseum and covers the Roman Forum, Imperial Fora, Palatine and designated SUPER sites.

The Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket is valid for two consecutive days; it includes one Colosseum entry with underground areas and arena, plus one entry to the Roman Forum, Palatine and SUPER sites.

Free admission is offered on the first Sunday of each month and on April 25, June 2 and November 4. Hours and ticket conditions can change, so check the official site before you go.

Opening hours

What can you see at the Roman Forum?

What can you see at the Roman Forum?

The Roman Forum is one part of a wider archaeological area that also includes the Palatine. Its main gateway is at Largo della Salara Vecchia 5/6, and the entrance at Via del Tulliano gives you another access point to consider when arranging your visit.

The standard ticket includes the Roman Forum and Roman Forum Museum, alongside the Palatine and its other inclusions. Several entrances serve the Forum and Palatine: Arch of Titus, Largo della Salara Vecchia, Via del Tulliano, Via del Foro Romano and Via di San Gregorio.

Choose your entry with the day’s sequence in mind, especially if you are visiting the Forum before the Colosseum.

Access varies across the archaeological area. The park’s three main entry and exit points—Largo della Salara Vecchia, Arch of Titus and Via di San Gregorio—are accessible to wheelchair users.

The Colosseum has a marked accessible route covering most of the first tier, and visitor elevators provide access to the entirety of the second tier. On the Palatine, the summit route has several short steep stretches and the paving is generally irregular.

Practical advice for the visit

Start with your booked Colosseum time, then work the Forum and Palatine around it. Because the standard ticket limits the Colosseum visit to 75 minutes and permits one entry to each area, decide which part of the Forum-Palatine visit you want to do before or after your timed slot.

Keep your identification document visible with your named ticket at the entrances. A ticket bought online can be shown on your smartphone, and the park’s free MyColosseum app includes interactive audio guides in Italian and English.

The park closes on December 25 and January 1, except when a separately announced special opening applies. Its opening hours and ticket rules are time-sensitive, so check the official site before you go.

If you are also planning to see Porta Pia, its history and location make it a distinct stop from the ancient archaeological area; the guide to visiting Porta Pia in Rome gives that landmark its own context.
